General Map of the Protected Domains of the Ottoman Empire
Kismet Gallery, 104 Cavell St, London E1 2JA
A monumental Ottoman map, produced by the Imperial Military Academy’s artists during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II, capturing the extent of the Ottoman Empire at the turn of the 20th century. Two landmark projects are foreshadowed: the Baghdad Railway, begun in 1903 with the goal of linking Europe to Mesopotamia, and the Hejaz Railway, launched in 1900 to facilitate pilgrimages to Mecca.
Our collection brings together extraordinary works spanning mysticism, exploration, science, engineering and cartography, each a window into an empire navigating its own transformation.
Located in both London & Istanbul, all works are viewable by appointment given 48 hours’ notice.
